Knights
Knights are probably the most difficult piece for beginners to understand. They are worth three pawns as a general rule, about the same as the bishop. Their method of movement is that of an L-shape; they move two squares horizontally or vertically and then one more vertically or horizontally, respectively. They are the only piece that can "jump" over other pieces, due to their odd method of movement. In other words, they can always move onto one of eight squares surrounding them (assuming they are far enough away from the edge of the board to access a square). Their method of capture is the same as most pieces: moving onto the square in which the other piece occupies. A diagram showing how the knight hops around is shown below.
