The King

The king is the most important piece in the game, but not the most powerful. It has no comparison of strength to other pieces because if you lose the king, the game is over! The king's range of motion is that of a severely hampered queen: it can move one square in any direction. The king transports itself in this manner:

Note that the king cannot move to squares where it would be captured, because this would end the game!

In addition to this, the king may undergo a process known as "castling". If neither the king nor a rook has moved and there are no pieces remaining between them, the king moves two spaces to the right (or left, depending on the which rook) and the rook moves to the opposite side of the king. This somewhat difficult concept is detailed below.
